Ted Yarbrough: 3 questions for the 3 amigos

Anna Soubry, Heidi Allen and Sarah Wollaston have all defected from the Conservative Party to join 8 anti-Brexit ex-Labour MPs in The Independent Group. These self-styled ‘3 Amigos’ have stated that they won’t be triggering by-elections because, to quote Heidi Allen, the Tories and Labour “want to crush the birth of democracy”.

I have three questions for them to help me understand this statement.

  1. Did the electorate of Totnes, South Cambridgeshire, and Broxtowe know what they were voting for in 2017? According to their own statements and literature, the Tory TIGers all promised to honour Brexit and uphold the Conservative manifesto they were running on. Here is a collection of statements and videos of Allen, Soubry and Wollaston promising to be Brexit-implementing MPs.
  2. Is it possible that voters have changed their minds since the 2017 General Election? I know I lack these 3’s insight, but perhaps it is possible that the Conservative volunteers who pounded the pavements to get these MPs elected may have changed their minds since Heidi Allen declared that she wants to destroy the Conservative party?
  3. Why do all the Tory TIGers support a “People’s Vote” on Brexit but not in their own constituencies?

If the answer to these questions are: 1. No they didn’t know what they were voting for, 2. They have changed their minds, and 3. Because the plebs are stupid and got in wrong in 2016 – who exactly is crushing democracy?
